What a privilege to pastor this
community. I have been here since the summer of 2004 and have found the community here to be one
of generosity of every kind. I always think of this pastoral assignment as a good fit. There are
four rules which I have always felt
a parish following Christ should have. They are:
- We should extend to every person we meet, the welcome, compassion
and understanding for which we ourselves hope. After all, when we reach heaven we will each be the
new person in town.
- Judgment belongs to God. We are never called to be faithful by
judging or condemning others. Religion that seeks to evaluate everyone else is too shallow a
spirituality to give true glory to our Creator.
- Heaven is work. Paradise requires people who can love without
condition and who can live in complete honesty without secrets. To enter the light of truth is to
be exposed. To enter the community of grace is to love. If we cannot do these things, paradise
itself becomes intolerable. Christ has granted us passage to heaven, now we must make ourselves
fit to belong there.
- Religion is the communal experience of spirituality. I truly
believe that there are depths of the divine that we can never experience alone. We need one another
for our spiritual journey to be headed towards God. If heaven is truly a union with God and others,
we cannot prepare for it in isolation.
