Junior High Curriculum

In language arts writing skills are reinforced through essays, research projects and creative writing; communication skills are strengthened through group participation and oral reports; and reading is reinforced through novels, short stories and poetry.

The sixth grade math program advances the basic skills with two things in mind: developing and learning to make numbers work for the student-not the student for the numbers. Seventh and eighth graders explore number theory, geometry, and algebra. In addition eighth graders meeting certain requirements may take Algebra I.

History covers a variety of studies. Sixth grade covers ancient history and the culture of ancient societies. Seventh grade studies the societies of the Aztecs, the Incas, and the Egyptians as well as the Roman and Byzantine empires. The eighth grade program studies American history and government. A major eighth grade group assignment is the Decades Project covering the international, national, and local history, fads, fashion and invention of each decade of the 1900’s.

Science emphasizes biology, physics, earth science and chemistry, encouraging the students to explore through hands-on experiments. Interdisciplinary approaches are also used in the education units taught. The science and language arts departments work together on a research project, which culminates in the science fair; the history and language arts departments work together on a mythology unit and additional units are planned for the future.

MPB strives to incorporate technology in all areas of the curriculum. Using the interactive white boards, teaching the use of the Internet and emphasizing competency with computers are goals of all teachers. Together the junior high staff works as a team with the students and parents to develop the skills and talents of each child.
