Reading

We have begun a new unit in reading called Dollars and Sense. During this unit we will be developing our business sense as we read stories that revolve around the theme of business. We will use our own experiences to help us understand basic business concepts such as marketing, cost, income, profit, and volume. We will also be reading about people who have started successful businesses and discussing how their experiences relate to us. As we move through this unit, please help your child find artifacts, newspaper articles, pictures, ect., that they can contribute to our class Question Concept Board.
Writing
In writing we are beginning to learn how to write strong, well-organized paragraphs. As we practice planning, drafting, revising, and publishing paragraphs we will be focusing on writing well-developed topic sentences, including interesting supporting details, and composing well-organized arguments.
Science

We have begun a Life Sciences unit on animals. Through our investigation of the animal kingdom we will be looking at how scientists classify animals, animal habitats and special adaptations that help animals survive, and food chains. As we proceed through the unit, I will provide the kids with a study guide that outlines what are expected to know at the end of each section. I have already provided them with their first study guide, Classifications. Please have your child share this with you.
Religion:
With the celebration of All Saints Day on November 1st, it is often traditional for us to dedicate some time to learning about the heroes of our faith. This year, each of you will pick a saint that you would like to learn about. After studying this person’s life, you will choose a symbol that you think best represents your saint. You will depict this symbol in a tissue paper stained glass window.
This project will be completed in class. However, in order to make this process go as smoothly as possible, it is important that each of you choose a saint and find resources about your saint’s life. We will begin this project on Tuesday, November 18; so please come to class with all of your research materials.
