THIRD QUARTER INFORMATION:
Third quarter is in full swing, and I would like to update you
on the class information for seventh and eighth grade English
and Reading classes, as well as graduation. If you need to contact
me, please call 303-757-1279 and leave a voice mail in #310. I
will return your call as soon as possible, usually within 24 hours.
You can also reach me via email: pevans@mpbdenver.org

SEVENTH GRADE ENGLISH AND READING:
English: Students are reviewing all of the eight parts of speech.
All grammar units will cover usage and diagramming. They should
have completed two sections of their Grammar Notebooks (sentences
and nouns). On study days, students may bring their Grammar Notebook
work to school, and I will check to be sure they are completing
it correctly. This notebook will be due the middle of May and
is completed at home. During this quarter and fourth quarter,
the students will continue to work on their writing skills with
both small group and individual assignments.
Reading: Students are completing a narrative poetry unit. Following
this unit, they will begin a study of folk tales from around the
world. This will involve a large group project which will take
the place of a book report and test.

8TH GRADE ENGLISH AND READING:
English: By the end of the school year, all students will have
reviewed the eight parts of speech. They are finishing up a review
of the verb and will move on to complements, adjectives, adverbs,
pronouns, etc.. They will also return to a writing unit which
will concentrate on the multi-paragraph paper (formerly called
the essay!)
Reading: Students are in the last few weeks of their poetry unit.
At the end of the unit and on the day of the final test, they
must turn in a Poetry Portfolio. This contains all of the poems
that have been assigned, two original poems, a comparison essay,
all notes, all journal entries, and all class and homework assignments.
They should have many of parts already organized or completed.
After poetry, students will begin a study of nonfiction: autobiographies,
biographies, essays, etc. This will involve reading selections
in their literature book as well as some outside sources and some
group work.

will have a group project instead of a book report for the April

For the March 6 report, the students will all be doing a R.A.F.T.S.
report which has been explained in detail. The April 3 report
will be an art project for all the students, and all of them must
read an American historical fiction book. The final report will
be an oral one for all students. Information about all of these
reports is on the handout that the students received, and each
kind of report will be thoroughly explained.
With the school year half over, graduation planning is now becoming
a focus for both parents and students. All parent committees have
been formed. If you have not been contacted yet, please call one

Family Celebration - Laurie Cook/Jim Cannata
Fast Food Luncheons - Nancy Whitman

The monthly Mass and breakfast have been delicious and well attended.
In addition, the students have enjoyed the fast food luncheons.
A huge thank from all of us for the efforts of the parents in
charge of those two events. Shortly the students will begin to
organize their parts in the graduation ceremony. Their theme created
by Emily Canham is "Mirrors reflect what is on the outside,
but friends reflect what is on the inside." This theme will
be reflected in all parts of the graduation events. All students
need to write a graduation speech (or at least a part of a speech)
which will be presented to their classmates early in March. From
these speeches, the graduation speech will be written. Students
interested in becoming one of the speakers for the graduation
ceremony will be trying out later in March.
